An article has appeared in the denominational magazine called New Horizons dealing with the "new atheists," such as Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins. I think that you will find this article informative and helpful:

Here's a really good article (actually, three good articles) on Christian scholarship from one of the greatest Christian scholars of the early 20th Century, none other than J. Gresham Machen. If you are at all involved in teaching, either as a school teacher, a home school parent, or a "normal" parent, or a university or college teacher you owe it to yourself to read, print and underline each gem of this/these article(s) for yourself. Great stuff!

Charles Haddon Spurgeon on Predestination:

One of the defining doctrines of Calvinism is that of predestination. The doctrine was spoken of in the Old Testament, and in the New Testament. Paul frequently spoke of it.
One of the most controversial aspects of it is the extent of God's foreknowledge. Exactly what was meant by the phrase "God's foreknowledge?" Does it mean that God looked down the corridors of history and saw who would believe of their own volition, and therefore chose those for eternal life? Or does it mean that God looked down the corridors of history and chose certain and particular persons based only on His own sovereign will and decision, choosing those persons only before they had done anything good or ill, and not based on their own eventual "decision for God?" This issue covers a lot of territory, and it has yet to be definitively decided by church council or meeting. The view of the OPC as well as that of Sharon OPC is that of the latter proposal.
One of the greatest defenders of the faith in the nineteenth century was the English Baptist preacher, Charles Haddon Spurgeon. He preached on this subject numerous time, and we feel that one of these sermons of his offers some good insight into the controversy. We recommend your reading it for yourself to gain this insight for yourself.

J. Gresham Machen's Christianity and Liberalism:

While this is not, strictly speaking, an article, but a book, the works of that excellent author, preacher and teacher, J. Gresham Machen, one of the founders of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church has now gone into the public domain. One of Machen's seminal works is Christianity and Liberalism.
Even Machen's opponents recognized his prodigious learning and devotion. Walter Lippman, a non-believer counted this book to be one of the greatest books of his time (the 1920s). He said in his own book, A Preface to Morals, "It is an admirable book. For its acumen, for its saliency, and for its wit, this cool and stringent defense of orthodox Protestantism is, I think, the best popular argument produced [in the controversy between Christianity and Liberalism]. We shall do well to listen to Dr. Machen." It has been named as one of the top 100 Books of the Millennium by World magazine, and Christianity Today named it as one of the top 100 books of the 20th Century. After ninety years it is still in print, and still a standard, a classic work on the conflict between Christianity and Liberalism.

Another gem from the "Prince of Preachers," Charles Haddon Spurgeon. This is a
Christmas sermon based on the text "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son
is given."—Isaiah 9:6.
"Merry Christmas to all, and to all a
good night."

I recently came across a good article by Dr. R. Albert Mohler, head of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He treats the cultural divide between liberals and conservatives, echoing at length what was said by one of the founders of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church - Dr. J. Gresham Machen (see above), that liberalism as expressed by his contemporaries nearly one hundred years ago in the United States, constitutes another religion opposed to Christianity. Dr. Mohler makes some excellent points, and you may find them interesting and quite illuminating in contemporary culture.
